Frequently Asked Questions
We have answered some of the questions we hear most often below. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please don’t hesitate to call us on 1300 255 261 or email reception@sydneycns.com.au
Referrals
Do I need a referral to see a neurosurgeon?
Yes. A valid referral from your GP or treating specialist is required before booking a consultation. A referral ensures you are eligible for a Medicare rebate and allows us to receive important background information about your health before your appointment.
How long is my referral valid for?
A referral from your GP is valid for 12 months. A referral from another specialist is valid for 3 months. The validity period begins from the date of your first appointment, not the date the referral was written. If your referral expires, please ask your GP or specialist to provide a new one.
Can I use a referral made out to a different neurosurgeon?
Yes. You can use a referral addressed to another neurosurgeon to attend our practice. If you are unsure whether your referral is valid, please contact our rooms and we will be happy to help.
Appointments
How do I make an appointment?
Once your referral has been sent to our rooms, please contact us by phone on 1300 255 261 or email reception@sydneycns.com.au to book. We are available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
How long will my appointment take?
New patient consultations are typically 30–45 minutes, and follow-up appointments around 15-20 minutes. Appointment duration will vary depending on your individual needs and the complexity of your condition - you are paying for our surgeons’ expertise and judgement, not a fixed time slot, and our commitment to your care is the same regardless of how long the consultation takes.
Do you offer telehealth appointments?
Yes. Telehealth consultations are available for patients in rural, regional, interstate and international locations. Please let us know when booking if you would like a telehealth appointment.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule, and no later than two business days before your appointment. Cancellations with less than two business days’ notice may incur a cancellation fee. Early notice allows us to offer your appointment to another patient in need.
Preparing for Your Consultation
What should I bring to my appointment?
Please bring your completed Patient Information Form, all past and recent imaging and reports (including a note of when and where each scan was obtained), a list of your current medications, your Medicare card, and your private health insurance details if applicable. If your appointment relates to a WorkCover or CTP matter, please also bring your pre-approval letter.
What if I can't get copies of my scans?
Please let us know as soon as possible if you are having difficulty obtaining your scans. Our team will do their best to help arrange an alternative way for your surgeon to access your imaging before your appointment.
Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?
Absolutely. You are very welcome to bring a partner, family member or friend. Having a support person with you can be helpful — both for reassurance and for remembering the information discussed. You may also find it useful to bring a written list of questions.
General FAQs
Will I definitely need surgery?
Not necessarily. Many neurological and spinal conditions can be managed without surgery. If surgery is recommended, it will only be because it offers the best chance of improving your symptoms and quality of life. We will always discuss all available options with you and involve you fully in any decisions about your care.
Can I come for a second opinion?
Yes. We welcome patients seeking a second opinion. We understand that facing a significant diagnosis can be overwhelming, and we are happy to provide an independent, thorough assessment to help you feel confident about your care. A referral is still required.
What fees are involved in my care?
Fees apply to both consultations and procedures. Fees vary depending on the nature of your consultation or procedure and your funding status. For detailed information about consultation and surgical fees, public and private patient options, WorkCover, CTP and overseas patients, please visit our Patient Fees page.
Can I choose to be a public or private patient?
Yes. You are free to choose whether you are treated as a public or private patient, and the right decision will depend on your individual circumstances. Our team is happy to talk you through your options when you contact our rooms. Regardless of how your care is funded, every patient at Sydney Centre for Neurosurgery receives the same high standard of care.
Will my GP be kept informed?
Yes. Following your consultation, a letter will be sent to your GP or referring doctor summarising the assessment and any planned management. We are committed to ensuring your care is well coordinated between all treating doctors.
What if my symptoms suddenly worsen?
If you experience a sudden or significant worsening of symptoms - such as sudden severe headache, new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or difficulty speaking - please go immediately to your nearest emergency department or call 000. Do not wait for an outpatient appointment.
