Fees for Consultations & Surgery

We believe every patient deserves a clear understanding of the fees associated with their care. Below you will find information about consultation and surgical fees. If you have any questions at any stage, please do not hesitate to contact our rooms directly on 1300 255 261.

Consultation fees

Fees are payable on the day of your appointment by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) or EFTPOS. If you bring your Medicare card, we can process your Medicare claim on the day.

Discounted fees are available for pensioners and health care card holders. Please mention this when booking your appointment.

Surgical fees

A detailed estimate of fees will be provided at the time of booking your surgery. Costs vary depending on the specific procedure and are assessed individually. The fees charged for surgery also depend on the classification of your hospital admission — that is, whether you are being treated as a public or private patient. Anyone can elect to be a private patient, and please do not hesitate to contact our rooms if you would like help understanding your options.

Public or private - it’s your choice

Sydney Centre for Neurosurgery treats both public and private patients, and the decision about how you are treated is yours to make. The right decision will depend on your individual circumstances and our team will be happy to guide you through your options when you contact our rooms.

We are committed to providing every patient — public or private — with the same high standard of care.

Private patients

If you have valid private health insurance, you may choose to use this and have your treatment at a hospital of your choice. A written fee estimate will be provided before your surgery is booked.

If you do not have private health insurance but wish to be treated as a private patient, you are welcome to elect to be admitted as a private uninsured patient. The hospital will provide you with a written quotation of their costs prior to your admission.

Public patients

If you elect to be treated as a public patient, hospital costs are covered and you will be placed on the public hospital waiting list for your procedure. Please note that consultation fees still apply for appointments in our rooms regardless of your funding status.

Public patients may also be referred to our public outpatient clinic at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where consultations are covered under Medicare. Please contact our rooms for more information about this pathway.

WorkCover and CTP patients

If you are covered by WorkCover or a third party insurer, your insurer will generally cover the costs of treatment as a private patient. Prior approval from your insurer is required before your appointment. Please refer to our For Patients page for further information on the pre-approval process.

Overseas patients

We welcome patients from overseas, including those who have travelled specifically for treatment and those requiring care during a visit to Australia. As overseas patients are not covered by Medicare, fees will apply to both consultations and surgery. Please contact our rooms directly to discuss your situation and we will provide you with a clear outline of the relevant costs.

Telehealth consultations are available for international patients prior to travel, allowing you to discuss your condition and treatment options with your surgeon before committing to an appointment in Sydney.
